La Verne is a quaint city in Los Angeles County. At the time of the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was 31,138. This was down from 31,892 at the time of the 2000 census.
La Verne is a suburb just 31 miles east of Los Angeles. It is situated on the northwest edge of the Pomona valley at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Also according to the 2010 Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.9 square miles. 8.7 square miles of this is land, with the other 0.2 square miles being made up of water.
The town was officially incorporated in 1906. Residents originally grew field crops, and eventually began planting citrus trees, which flourished in the area. The city became known as the “”Heart of the Orange Empire.”” La Verne flourished as a center of the citrus industry until after the end of World War II, when the citrus industry in California slowly faded away.
Today the last two orange groves are on the grounds of Heritage Park and the La Verne Mansion. The University of La Verne is located on 3rd Street in La Verne. Lutheran High School is located on Fruit Street. Bonita High School is located on D Street. Calvary Baptist Schools are located at the intersection of Damien Avenue and Forestdale Street.
Damien High School, a Catholic all boys school, is located at the intersection of Damien and Bonita Avenues. La Verne has a population density of 3,593 people per square mile. The racial breakdown of La Verne is 74 percent Caucasian, 3.5 perent African-American, 0.7 percent Native American, 8 percent Asian, 0.3 percent Pacific Islander, 10 percent of the population were from other races, and 5 percent were from two or more races.
Hispanics and Latinos of any race comprised to make up 32 percent of the city’s total population. The population is well distributed with 22 percent being under the age of 18, 10.2 percent being aged 18 to 24, 22 percent being aged 25 to 44, 31 percent being aged 45 to 64, and 17 percent of people who lived in the city were 65 years of age or older. The median age of the city is 43 years old.
